Statistical Observation of Pediatric Patients admitted to a Hospital(1973~1977)


Abstract
Distribution of diseases in children is different between regions in which they live and the social class to which they belong.
This study is intended to find out the morbidity and mortality of prevailing diseases among children admitted to Sung Shim hospital during the past 5 years from January 1973 to December 1977.
The hospital is located in the central region of Seoul and majority of the pediatric patients who visit this hospital belong to middle or upper social class. Results were as follows.
1) Total number of patients admitted during the past 5 years were amounted to 2899 (Males: 1911, Females: 988).
2) By age, children under 1 year of age was the largest group of the admitted patients
.(36.8%) and those who were between 12 and 15 years of age was the smallest group (6. 28%).
3) Three major diseases that caused the patients to be admitted were infectious, respiratory and neonatal diseases.
4) The number of deaths among the admitted cases were 64, showing a fatality rate of 2.2%. The fatality rate was the highest among children under 1 year of age.
5) The leading causes of deaths were in order of acute encephalopathy, idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome, tuberculous meningitis, prematurity.
